The latest Boston University building is not just the tallest on the urban Charles River campus, but it is also the tallest as well as the university’s most energy-efficient building and one of the most sustainable buildings in all of Massachusetts.
Suffolk announced the completion of the project, Boston University Center for Computing & Data Sciences, designed with intellectual collaboration top of mind and with the goal to make a positive impact.
A few notable facts about the building:
- First of its kind on the campus, the new building does not use any fossil fuels, which also makes it one of the most sustainable buildings in Massachusetts
- Suffolk installed 31 bores that reach 1,500-feet underground, twice the height of the building, and each of the bores utilize the Earth’s natural geothermal resources to heat and cool the building
- It features terraces and green roofs that not only look stunning but also reduce the urban heat island effect
- The unique design is composed of a series of floorplates shifted and cantilevered around the building’s central core, creating a vertically stacked and staggered layout of “neighborhoods” for each academic discipline
- At 19-stories high and 345,000 square feet, this is now the tallest building on campus
