7 Ways To Achieve Professional Painted Cabinets

Painting your cabinets is a great way to refresh your kitchen space while saving money. However, it's important to follow the tips below from professional cabinet painters for a seamless finish!
1. Select the Right Paint for The Job
To ensure that your cabinets have a professionally finished appearance, select a quality paint brand for the job. Though initially more expensive, it's worth the investment to guarantee a long-lasting durable finish. For kitchens, oil-based paints come highly recommended as they have the ability to resist both staining and moisture. However, there are many water-based paint products on the market that work just as well. These paints are fairly durable and are easily scrubbed clean. Lastly, latex-based paints are also a popular choice as they have a quicker drying ability and low VOCs.
 2. Choose Color Wisely
When chosen carefully, the right colored cabinets can complement and enhance your existing kitchen. Make sure to pay attention to the color of your walls, your flooring materials, countertops, and appliances when selecting a cabinet color. White may seem neutral and boring, but it is a favorite for a reason! It's the only color that can virtually make anything look fresh and clean while brightening the space.
Selecting darker and bolder cabinet colors are mostly ideal in large kitchen spaces. They can help ground a large room while offering personality. Lastly, mid-range colors that are neither too light nor too dark can help distract from spills, stains, and fading due to light exposure.
3. Select the Ideal Finish
Your kitchen cabinets should have the ability to resist staining, wear and tear, and handle being open and closed dozens of times daily. It's important to choose a durable finish that looks good and also handles regular use well.
For kitchens, high-gloss or semi-gloss finishes are still the most popular options. They can look luxurious and sophisticated when professionally applied to your cabinets. However, high-gloss finishes aren't ideal for households with young children as they easily show grubby handprints. Semi-gloss is the safest and most reliable choice as it reflects light and enhances the amount of space in your kitchen.
4. Remove Hardware and Label Accordingly
Some people try to cut corners when painting cabinets, but for a professional look, remove the doors from the cabinets and place the hardware in appropriately labeled baggies.
Make sure to number your doors and match them with the appropriately labeled hardware. This ensures that when you need to reinstall your cabinet doors, you can do so with ease and not have to fumble to find the correct holes and hardware.
5. Always Prep First
It's crucial to prep your cabinets before painting to ensure that they take the paint well and have a seamless finish every time. Failure to prep your surface before applying paint will result in a botched job that's hard to miss. This means stripping the previous gloss and stain from the cabinets, and if necessary, applying paint stripper to go through the previous layers.
6. Prime the Cabinets
It's crucial to prime cabinets before applying paint as it ensures that the paint will adhere well to the surface below. Additionally, a primer makes the surface more durable and will ensure that it lasts significantly longer. There are many stores that also offer tinted primer to match with your paint color to ensure even coverage. For most cabinets, only one coat of primer is necessary for ample coverage.
7. Apply in Thin Coats
Regardless of the method you choose to use to apply the paint, make sure it goes on in thin coats. For most cabinet surfaces, one coat of primer and two coats of paint are adequate to provide an even sleek finish. Of course, depending on the chosen color, additional coats may become necessary for better coverage. In any case, it's important to wait for a layer of paint to dry before applying a new layer.
