For a long time, dark kitchens were not really used, basically because of the fact that dark furniture usually makes spaces look smaller than they really are. Dark themed kitchens look fun but a small mistake can make the whole thing go down the drain.
To save you from your DIY could-be blunders, we asked experts at Kitchen Infinity to give some insight on how easy it is to mess up a dark themed kitchen.
Here are the 5 things that can go horribly wrong while going for a darker themed kitchen:

1. Can Get Outdated Real Quick

Dark themed kitchens will look outdated quicker than white kitchens. Homes with a dark theme are substantially more testing to pull off. Choose a wrong theme, and you may simply end up with rooms that look more dull than modern. Dark might be in style for some time, yet that doesn’t imply that it generally will be for a longer period of time. In case you want to sell your home over the next five to ten years, you might need to go with a more secure theme decision. Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to sell it in good amounts and you might not gain any profit.

2. Kitchen Will Look Smaller

No matter how big your kitchen is, if you have opted for a darker theme and the cabinets, countertops and flooring is in darker color, then everything will look congested and you will feel suffocated. Visitors will also point out the fact that your kitchen is small but you know that it is not made like that and the problem lies in the theme that you chose. So choosing the right theme is very important. Plan ahead of the time so that you do not have to deal with problems like this.

3. They’ll Need Lots Of Light

To keep a dark kitchen from looking dull, suffocated and congested, you will require a good measure of lighting into that space. Since everything looks dull, you can’t depend on one main light, and the kitchen will require a greater lighting plan than light themed kitchens. The whole process will be expensive. Also, there will be an increase in electricity bill as well as the lights will be switched on for most of the time even if you go for energy efficient lights.

4. Requires More Cleaning

It’s not that dark colored countertops get dirty easily, it’s just that they tend to highlight the dust more easily. If you decide to go for a dark theme for your kitchen, you will have to spend more time cleaning it to keep it looking great. Not because dark colors attract more dust, duh. But because dark colors naturally have the tendency to look a bit rustic and might we say, a little unclean (ish). Especially when it comes to kitchens. So when you are going for a dark theme, get ready to be spending a lot of time and energy in cleaning the nooks and crannies.

5. Choosing The Contrasting Colors

There are some colors that are classic out there which once in a while become unfashionable. At that point there are other shading alternatives – like dark kitchens. When you choose a dark color for your kitchen, adding hints and tones of fresh colors becomes really tricky and challenging. Dark on dark will be a huge disaster but choosing contrasting colors for your kitchen also won’t be easy.
Throwing in bright colored chairs, colorful decorations, paintings and/or a colorful backsplash could do the trick.
If you are a risk taker and you have done your research, only then choose the dark theme for your kitchen, otherwise there are better and simple yet aesthetically pleasing options for you to choose from.
