When using expensive or unique materials in home design, there are several important factors to consider to ensure a successful outcome. Blake Sutton, President of Est Est Interior Design, shares his key considerations:
● Material durability & longevity: Different materials require different levels of care and maintenance, leading to a longer lifetime of use. For instance, natural stones are fairly durable, and porcelains last forever, but marble and wood floors aren’t as durable. Knowing what materials will withstand the intended use and environmental conditions will go a long way.
● Compatibility with surroundings: Consider how your materials will interact with the other elements in the design, including existing structures or components. Will your countertop work with the backsplash and the flooring, plus the hardware on the cabinets? How will your flooring last with the dining room chairs or constant traffic through the hallway?
● Documentation & warranty: Document the specifications of the materials used and their expected performance. Your supplier should provide this information to you. Ensure there is a clear understanding of any warranties and guarantees provided by the suppliers.
