2020 Exterior Trend Predictions via Royal Building Products

Mixed Use Materials on Exteriors

  • While brick and stone remain popular, these materials are no longer the main focal point of exteriors. Instead, blend the materials with the rest of the home’s exterior design features to present a dynamic look that isn’t overpowering.

  • Add accents in the gable going the opposite direction of your siding (so horizontal siding should have a board & batten in the gable) or texture in the gable by adding shake.

  • Incorporate mixed use of sidings and blendings of various sidings—vertical, horizontal, board and batten, in shades of the same color family

  • Blend siding of different widths to create a rustic look. You could also use different styles of the same siding, such as a blend of shiplap and cedar shingles of a similar color, so that the texture is the main design feature.

Indoor-Outdoor Living

  • Indoor-outdoor living continues to be an emphasis for homeowners in North America with consumers investing more time and money into their outdoor spaces. Home builders and remodelers are capitalizing on this trend, with the addition of lavish decks, patios and porches to new and existing homes.

  • Decks have a seamless flow from indoor to outdoor

    • Royal’s Zuri Decking, a premium PVC decking, mimics the look of real hardwood flooring without the maintenance.

  • Screened in porches with floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors create the feeling of being outdoors

  • Open porches/deck hybrids featuring elaborate built-in kitchens, seating, fireplaces and roofs allow homeowners in cooler climates to use their outdoor spaces for more of the year

  • Personalization

    • Personalized details such as initials and inlay designs in their decks to make them look less “cookie cutter”

    • Increased interest in making a style statement through exterior decor on front porches, changing out decorations every season, personalized doormats, house numbers and door knockers

  • Maximalism extends to greenery, with an increase in deck/porch gardening, with overflowing planters at different heights on porches and decks

  • Mix textures and materials with furniture, using everything from metal, wicker, wood, distressed—nothing “matchy matchy”

Statement Front Doors and Garage Doors

  • Garage doors often take up a lot of a home’s facade so it’s important that they add style to the home

  • Glass garage doors, a trend that started in California and is now moving east, in clear to opaque finishes gives homes a “lit from within glow”

  • A sleek updated garage door can add a modern touch to a farmhouse style

  • Trending Front Doors: Dutch Doors, Black or Blue doors, natural wood doors, and glass and/or iron statement front doors

  • Red front doors are out and make a home look dated

Transitional farmhouse-inspired style

  • People are growing weary of full-fledged farmhouse style and instead are incorporating elements of the farmhouse trend into their homes.

  • Use of shiplap, such as Royal’s Nickel Gap Shiplap, in a bathroom or mudroom, gives a fresh modern appearance but is not the focal point of the house.

  • Incorporation of Board and Batten siding. Mixed-use materials lending to a farmhouse vibe. Varied rooflines

Dark colors in all shades

  • Dark accents have been popular for awhile, but we are now seeing a cross-country trend of darker colors as the primary color for the exterior

  • Dark on dark palettes are trending, especially on trim used around windows and doors

  • Natural, dark wood tones are being used to give a rustic appearance

Investing in high quality materials and minimalist landscaping

  • Homeowners do not want to spend their free time working on their home so they are investing in high quality, maintenance free materials that will last, such as composite decking or PVC cellular siding products and trim.

  • Similarly, homeowners do not want to spend their time working on their yard or hiring expensive groundskeepers, so we are seeing a trend of simple landscaping using annual plants

  • No one is using real wood for siding, decking or trim anymore—it has proven to be expensive and can not stand up to the weather elements

    • Cellular PVC siding with a smooth finish offers the appearance of painted cedar siding which is desired by architects, especially those who favor New Urbanism design

    • Cellular composite (PVC) decking products do not require sanding, staining or maintenance

Simple, timeless accents

  • Out = shiny brass, opulent iron designs and accents (flowery details)

  • In = simple, timeless iron accents (railings, etc.) and oil-rubbed bronze

  • Wood-looking elements (not real wood) to add warmth

Coastal Vibes

  • Bright or pastel, beachy colors are becoming popular for coastal homes

  • Colorful front door in unexpected shades such as yellow or green—pop of color on homes that are white/black or grey

  • White PVC shiplap used for interior and exterior applications

Celect Canvas, a new product from Royal Building Products, is a great option for coastal homes that want the low maintenance and durability for harsh coastal weather, but with the ability to customize the color to achieve the beachy look.
