Alto-Shaam, a foodservice equipment manufacturer, is donating $135,000 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Wisconsin chapter following its 9th annual Jerry Maahs Memorial Golf Outing, which was held on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Ironwood Golf Course in Sussex, Wisconsin.
Each year, the event brings together employees and partners to memorialize Alto-Shaam founder Jerry Maahs, who passed away from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2006. The company started the annual golf outing to support the search for a cure for this blood cancer.
Alto-Shaam’s donation supports a research grant honoring Jerry Maahs. The grant supports a portfolio of research dedicated to advancing treatments for the disease.
“The success of this event says a lot about Alto-Shaam, the employees, the corporate leadership, its vendors and business partners and the man who Jerry Maahs was,” said Karen Ropel, development director of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Wisconsin chapter. “This contribution is supporting a team of researchers committed to curing blood cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.”
Since the event began, Alto-Shaam has raised more than $620,000 for cancer research. Each golf outing includes a dollar-for-dollar corporate match for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Jerry Maahs Memorial Golf Outing remains the largest third-party fundraiser in the state of Wisconsin.
“Our family takes pride in following Jerry’s steps and it’s an honor to know how Jerry’s legacy for innovation continues by funding these researchers,” said Steve Maahs, Alto-Shaam’s chief operating officer and president – and Jerry’s son. “It’s been fulfilling to support a team dedicated to curing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.”
