Boeing South Carolina (BSC) recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Skanska-built Boeing South Carolina Decorative Paint Facility in North Charleston, South Carolina.
The 296,000-square-foot, two-bay decorative paint facility is capable of painting two Boeing 787-10 airplanes simultaneously. Before the facility was operational, all BSC-built 787s were flown to other locations for final painting and then flown back to South Carolina for customer delivery.
Skanska has been working with BSC since the project started in November 2014 and created a seemless environment of teamwork. With more than 1.3 million man hours worked by more than 3000 workers, the new decorative paint facility was completed on time.
“We have a true partnership with the Boeing team on this project especially in the areas of both safety and inclusion,” said Account Manager Matt Frey for Skanska’s South Carolina operations. “Because of our shared values, we have made a great impact on the local construction community regarding worker safety and training.”
The new facility includes two paint bays as well as office, conference rooms and dedicated mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) rooms. The building has boilers, chillers, cooling towers, an on-site wastewater treatment system, and a thermal storage system to reduce power consumption.
The event was attended by North Charleston Mayor R. Keith Summey, South Carolina State Senator Sean Bennett, South Carolina State Senator Marlon Kimpson, South Carolina State Senator Paul Campbell, South Carolina State Representative Katherine Arrington and officials from Boeing and Skanska along with more than 250 Boeing employees. The local Stall High School Steel Drum Band provided entertainment.
