Fort Carson is Recipient of the Secretary of the Army Award for Energy and Water Management Due to Drastic Reduction of Annual Water Usage
Petaluma, CA – HydroPoint, makers of WeatherTRAK® and 2014 EPA WaterSense® Manufacturer Partner of the Year, announced U.S. Army installation Fort Carson is successfully using the company’s innovative WeatherTRAK smart irrigation controllers to reduce water consumption and operate more efficiently with smart water management.
Fort Carson, an Army post located Southwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado, covers 137,000 landscaped acres and is one of the most frequently requested U.S. Army duty stations. The base received a mandate to reduce water usage by 20% by the year 2020, and set about adjusting its procedures and looking for partners to help achieve these aggressive goals.
WeatherTRAK irrigation controllers were selected to streamline the irrigation procedures at Fort Carson, which involved the installation of 165 controllers throughout the entire base. WeatherTRAK uses GPS technology and daily advanced weather data to adjust water irrigation levels based on real-time weather conditions. The controllers combined with other water-saving initiatives have produced significant results, which led to the base receiving the Secretary of the Army Award for Energy and Water Management.
“We are very pleased to work with Fort Carson and to see the immediate impact our WeatherTRAK controllers are having on the base’s water reduction goals,” said Chris Spain, CEO of HydroPoint. “Our solution was one of several changes that have allowed the base to be on track for a savings of 215 million gallons of water, a substantial amount for a region of the country that is experiencing prolonged drought. The work with Fort Carson illustrates two complementary benefits of our product which are water savings and substantial operational improvements.”
“Fort Carson achieved these water reductions without limiting anyone’s use of water,” said Mark Hunsicker, Directorate of Public Works Operations and Maintenance Division Chief.
In addition to the water savings, the implementation of WeatherTRAK improved the base’s operational efficiency through a streamlined remotely controlled Rain Pause function. This action takes two minutes to complete for the entire base via WeatherTRAK, a task that previously required 30 or more man hours. This feature intelligently suspends scheduled irrigation after periods of heavy rain. If it senses more than one-eighth of an inch in a 24-hour period, the solution will not irrigate the following day.
